Happy Birthday E=MC^2!!!  -  9/29/2005 1:25:22 PM
My friend Eric Stephani brought to my attention today that it is the 100th anniversary of Einstein's famous E=MC^2 equation.  He found a website that includes 10 top physicists giving their thoughts about the historic equation and what it means today.  It's quite entertaining!

New Semester  -  9/15/2005 11:45:33 AM
Wow, my senior year of college?!  What's up with that?!  Good thing I have at least a super senior year as well.  Anyhow, I hate my schedule so far!  If you're a college student (or maybe anyone), you've probably had that one horrible schedule that you just don't like.  For me, it's an hour of class followed by an hour break, repeat ad nauseum.  So basically I go to class for an hour, walk across campus to work, and walk back across campus to another class.  Repeat 4 times a day.  Makes for plenty of exercise I guess.

As for my actual classes, they seem alright.  I'm lovin' calc III right now since we're learning about vectors.  Basically I've been using them daily in physics classes for 2 years.  I guess I should have done it the other way around because then it would have been a walk in the park.  Speaking of physics I'm finally in a class that teaches about concepts that aren't more than 100 years old.  A little relativity, some nuclear physics, and my favorite, Quantum!  On the computer science side of things I've got File Structures and Computer Architecture, or Computer Acronyms as it should be called.  Both are pretty good, better than gen. eds. anyway.  It's great to have those out of the way!  We'll see how it goes but I think it'll be a good one.

I also have to give a presentation for my practicum in CS.  I developed an application over the summer for the MIO that allows students to print Microsoft Office documents from anywhere on the internet directly to the front desk printers in the halls.  Who knows, maybe it will even grow to the whole campus someday.  Plus I get a grade and credit for it.

It all started a couple years ago when we looked for a solution to allow printing from the dorms.  They were all out of our reach because of price or complexity so we gave up.  Finally I started tinkering around and found I could develop something custom in house to hopefully fit our needs.  It's very modular so I'm expecting it to support more file formats in the months to come.  I had no idea it would take off so fast but after a week of school there are already about 75 users with about 100 jobs printed.  That's huge considering it's brand new and most of the publicity is by word of mouth.  We'll see what happens!

First Quantum Solution!  -  8/26/2005 3:14:27 PM
Check this out...

D-Wave is making huge strides.  Looks like we might actually have a rough form of a Quantum computer in the next couple years.  How cool is that?!
